Getting Started in Therapy:  Meeting with a Psychologist

If you are interested in psychotherapy, please email info@warewellness.com or call 214-256-9273 (Extension 0) to schedule an initial consultation at no charge with one of the psychologists.

The psychologists offer this opportunity because they feel it is important to meet in person to determine whether you will be comfortable working with one of the psychologists.  This initial consultation also allows the psychologist to begin assessing your difficulties and discuss treatment options with you.  If you have a few specific questions before scheduling the initial consultation, please feel free to leave a voice mail or send an email with these questions (emergency situations should not be addressed via email or voice mail).

During the initial consultation, you will receive information about Ware Wellness Group, the experience of the psychologist in the area(s) that you would like to address, and a personal history questionnaire (to be completed before your first therapy session).

The questionnaire will provide your psychologist with a concise understanding of your background and an overview of the issues you wish to address in therapy; this information will allow your psychologist to assist you more quickly in obtaining benefit from therapy.

It is important that you feel comfortable with any therapist or psychologist you choose since you must be able to open up with that psychologist about your goals, thoughts, and feelings.

For that reason, if you feel that the psychologist you're meeting with is not the right fit for you after the initial consultation, feel free to ask the psychologist for recommendations for other psychologists or therapists, based on the information you provided during the initial consultation.

Equally important in selecting a psychologist is assessing the psychologist's training and experience.

Licensed psychologists, such as Dr. Ware and Dr. Liss-Clarke completed doctoral degrees at accredited institutions, completed accredited internship programs (approximately 2,000 hours), completed at least one year of full-time post doctoral supervised experience by a licensed psychologist (an additional 2,000 hours), and passed state and national licensing examinations.

Such rigorous credentialing processes for psychologists are important, as are continuing educational experiences and training after licensure.  Be certain to investigate the credentials, experience, and participation in the professional community of any psychologist or therapist you are considering.  You should also investigate whether the psychologist or therapist has ever been reprimanded by the licensing board.  Licensed psychologists are required to follow rules and procedures to make certain clients are treated ethically and licensed mental health professionals may be sanctioned if a client files a complaint or the licensing board otherwise becomes aware of a lapse in adherence to professional standards.
